In his latest tract/poem/meditation, Jean-Luc Godard presents scenes on a cruise ship, which he treats like the spaceship in WALL•E — as a big floating metaphor for our passive corruption. At the bottom of the screen appear heady little slogans and pensées, displayed in cutting counterpoint to the images. This is Godard's most focused statement in years. Yet what he's saying is often leftist agitprop. He depicts the passengers as clueless zombies, and even Patti Smith's appearance as a singer can't dispel the air of doomstruck judgment. B
