Ceremony (2011)

Uma Thurman hasn't had an easy time at the box office lately. Last year, her dizzy comedy Motherhood made the wrong kind of news when it raked in $141 during its opening weekend in the U.K. No, that's not a typo. And her follow-up, Ceremony (2010, R, 1 hr., 30 mins.), didn't fare much better here. But director Max ''Son of the Fonz'' Winkler's offbeat charmer is a small treat, especially if you're a fan of Wes Anderson's high-IQ brand of corduroy quirk. Michael Angarano plays a Max Fischer type who pines for his engaged ex (Thurman). Yes, it's been done before (and better). But Uma lends it a sly and sexy spark. B
