Long before Tom Hanks ran around the Louvre spouting crackpot theories about Renaissance painters and Vatican assassins, Sean Connery was solving religious riddles in the far better thriller The Name of the Rose (1986, R, 2 hrs., 11 mins.), out on Blu-ray. Connery's brainiac monk and his teen sidekick (what's up, Christian Slater!) sleuth out a string of grisly murders at a remote 14th-century abbey. The film's packed with messages in invisible ink, secret staircases, and corpses in cauldrons of pig's blood. And since
Connery's bald as a cue ball, that means no distracting Hanksian haircuts! B+
