The vision of Chicago in this firecracker crime novel is one teeming with violence and venality, where
Al Capone has been replaced by gangbangers and authorities are far from untouchable. Two characters with intertwining pasts — a cop under investigation and an actress involved in a deal gone bad — take turns narrating as they attempt to clear their names and avoid the corruption around them. Newton's plotting in Start Shooting is more shotgunning than precision shooting, and narrative elements accumulate quickly even if they don't add up. But his lit-fuse urgency hits you right in the gut. B+
