THE FORGIVENESS OF BLOOD Nik (Tristan Halilaj) and Dren (Elsajed Tallalli)

Details Limited Release: Feb 24, 2012; Length: 109 Minutes; Distributor: Sundance Selects

Seven years after Maria Full of Grace, Joshua Marston once again distinguishes himself as a filmmaker serious about understanding lives a world away from his own. This gripping if tamped-down drama is steeped in ancient Albanian culture, where the real, tragic consequences of blood feuds can keep families trapped in their homes for generations. That high price is paid here by Nik (Tristan Halilaj), a teenager angry at being separated from his girlfriend because of a land dispute (and a murder) embroiling the men in his family. The largely nonprofessional Albanian cast is excellent. (Also available on VOD) B+
