Wouldn't it be nice to hear all those Beach Boys hits live on stage? Though the Broadway musical Good Vibrations flopped in 2005, the band's sun-kissed catalog gets a new outing in Surf, which opened July 17 in Las Vegas (Ticketmaster.com). Director Kristin Hanggi, who made a Broadway hit of the jukebox musical Rock of Ages (the basis for the Tom Cruise film), says she tried to create a beach-set "love story in the tradition of the early '60s." The score packs familiar hits ("Help Me, Rhonda," "Fun, Fun, Fun") as well as lesser-known tunes ("That's Not Me"). For Hanggi, the main challenge was evoking her own SoCal upbringing. "We all have those eternal summers on the beach where we fell in love," she says, "and where we got our hearts broken for the first time."
