College is supposed to be a defining period of all-night talks, wild parties, and intellectual growth. Penelope, a young woman of average looks and wealth, finds little of those things in her first year at Harvard. Everyone's too busy talking about how busy they are, pregaming for parties they never go to, and BS'ing papers on Shakespeare. In her debut novel Penelope, Harrington (a 2008 Harvard grad) may skimp on plot, but she presents a sharply observant and hilarious take on the disillusionment of growing up. B+
