Devil of compassion? Angel of retribution? There's no defining the drifter (David Dewaele) who passes through a remote French village, forming an equally inexplicable bond with an abused young woman (Alexandra Lematre) in the austerely wild, religiously amoral drama, Outside Satan, by Bruno Dumont (L'Humanité) set in untamed northern coastal France. Dumont's rigorous, serious attention to the mysteries of good, evil, and faith rewards those willing to be confounded. B+
