Until further notice, just assume you should buy everything Denise Mina publishes. Technically, she's spinning out mysteries in this case, did the granddad shot to death during the post-office robbery know his killer and maybe even conspire with him? but what her career is really adding up to is a portrait of her native Glasgow, in particular the battle between idealism and corruption both within people's hearts and the political arteries of the city itself. Gods and Beasts is Mina's third novel with detective Alex Morrow, who's now beleaguered by twins as well as all the secrets of her family and hometown. B+
