''I've lost every book I've ever written,'' says the unnamed narrator of this postmodern novel, The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards. He leaves the first one at an airport, where it's swept into the trash — but he keeps trying to write the Great American Novel anyway. Unfortunately, he's outshone by his rival Julian, a talented gay author, and he keeps getting distracted by Julian's beautiful friend Evelyn. Jansma himself is trying to write an epic — partly by showcasing his characters' writing as they travel the globe. But the stories-within-stories lead nowhere. Like the hero's books, this one feels a little lost. C+
