The sex is in the heel, indeed. Kinky Boots the musical based on the 2005 British film dominated the Tony nominations on April 30, garnering 13 nods. Cyndi Lauper was nominated for best score; Harvey Fierstein, for best book. Trailing not far behind were Matilda the Musical (12 nods), Pippin (10), and Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella (9). On the play side, the celebrated revival of Clifford Odets' Golden Boy proved just as strong as its boxer protagonist, fighting its way to eight nods. Tom Hanks is one step closer to an EGOT thanks to a best-lead-actor nom for his Broadway debut in Lucky Guy; the play's beloved author, the late Nora Ephron, is also recognized for best play. And Two and a Half Men's Holland Taylor is up for lead actress for her turn as the feisty former Texas governor Ann Richards in Ann. But perhaps most notable were the Hollywood snubs: Al Pacino, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain, Alec Baldwin, Bette Midler, Sigourney Weaver, and Bobby Cannavale were all overlooked this year. The Tony Awards will air June 9 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
