One year after releasing Niceville — a crazytown sui generis mash-up of crime thriller and supernatural Southern gothic — Stroud has written a sequel, The Homecoming, that's even wackier: A typical 10-page stretch cuts from a time traveler visiting a plantation to four mafiosos plotting Mob vengeance in a federal prison. Stroud writes the thriller stuff with a dry wit and a conversational snap; the paranormal aspects seem undercooked by comparison. But Homecoming, the second in a planned trilogy, is an addictive small-town terror symphony masquerading as a beach read. B+
