In his first memoir, 2007's Love Is a Mix Tape, Sheffield recounted how he used pop music to deal with the sudden passing of his wife. Turn Around Bright Eyes picks up with the author moving to New York and fighting grief through the power of karaoke. It's a mess, though a poetic one — his warm recollection of first meeting the DJ/astronomer who became his new wife is a knockout. Sheffield is fundamentally a gifted essayist, which makes portions of Turn Around Bright Eyes inimitable but is also why the book never congeals to become greater than the sum of its oft-brilliant parts.
