College freshman Cath Avery writes fan fiction for the Simon Snow series, a Harry Potter-esque franchise that she's obsessed with, just like the rest of the world, in Fangirl. Escaping into her (fan)fictional world is infinitely preferable to dealing with her real one, given her emotionally unstable father, out-of-control twin sister, and deadbeat mom. In this poignant follow-up to Eleanor & Park, Rowell manages to capture both the wildly popular universe of fanfic and the inside of an 18-year-old's head. Consider me a fangirl of this charming coming-of-age tale. A-
