Maleficent
May 30
Just as Wicked reimagined The Wizard of Oz from the Wicked Witch's perspective, Maleficent tells the origin story of the villainess from Disney's 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty. In this live-action film, her evil eminence is played by Angelina Jolie. "It's a story of how she became evil," says first-time director Robert Stromberg (best known as a production designer on Avatar), and why she cursed blond beauty Aurora (Elle Fanning) with a deep slumber. He says working with Jolie was a dream, especially when she acted opposite her 5-year-old daughter, Vivienne, who plays a young Aurora. "I mean, I didn't have to introduce them," says Stromberg, laughing. "There's a built-in chemistry that's a plus."
