The man-child at the center of this one (also slated to become a movie) is Bartholomew Neil, who goes on a journey of personal growth — which includes writing letters to Richard Gere and befriending local eccentrics — following his mother's death. His adventures can be winningly madcap, but Quick tries too hard to crowd-please; the endless quirks get in the way of any real pathos. B-
