Pavone, a former book editor, pens a fast-paced, airport-ready thriller in a less-than-fast-paced setting: the book-publishing industry. His heroine is a fortysomething literary agent on the run from ex-CIA goons who are chasing down a manuscript about a felonious media mogul with political ambitions. Strangely, the mysterious author bypasses The New York Times, CNN, and even WikiLeaks to submit a typewritten manuscript to a book agent — and not even by email attachment. Despite his quaint premise and some frankly implausible plot twists, Pavone writes well about the politics of modern publishing, waxing nostalgic for a time when indie bookstores sold more tomes than scones. B-
