Dave Eggers once made people cry, or at least feel. You wouldn't know it now. While I enjoyed his polarizing 2013 technothriller The Circle, his new novel only fuels his critics' chief complaint: that his hand has become heavier than his heart. Your Fathers — composed entirely in dialogue — centers on a troubled thirtysomething man who kidnaps, one by one, seven people (plus a dog) to...talk. In a series of conversations, the kidnapper uses (a) his friend's untimely death and (b) NASA's diminished ambitions to illustrate that young American lives today lack a sense of purpose. He makes his point loudly, but the belabored message would've better served a short story than this 200-plus-page hammer to the head. B-
