Composed of three novellas, the book begins as a young British landscape architect travels to a Mediterranean island off the south of France for a career-changing commission, only to find herself on a Manderley-like estate haunted by the destruction — and perhaps ghosts — of World War II. The subsequent sections flash back to the lives of two young women involved in the resistance movement in Britain and France — one a factory worker, the other an intelligence officer. Lawrenson writes compassionately and convincingly of the war's horrors and the ways in which ordinary people become heroes, continuously building the tension toward a never-saw-it-coming convergence of the trio of tales.
