HEALTH WATCH ''Star Trek'''s James Doohan has spent the last three weeks in a Seattle hospital, recovering from what his spokesman says was a ''very serious'' bout of pneumonia. However, the 81-year-old actor is now out of the intensive care unit and should be discharged by Monday. Or, as the spokesman puts it, ''Scotty is still beaming it up.'' He's expected to be back on the sci-fi convention circuit by April.
In other ''Trek'' news, William Shatner tells TV Guide he suffered from a suicidal depression after Nerine, his wife of less than two years, got drunk and drowned in the couple's pool in 1999. The erstwhile Captain Kirk said he had ''a strong feeling that life was not really good enough to stay with it.'' Nonetheless, he boldly went on, and last February, got married for a fourth time, to Elizabeth Martin....
Roger Ebert is going to the hospital today, but the prognosis for a convalescence of only a few days is thumbs-up. ''I am having surgery to remove a malignant tumor in my thyroid gland,'' he said in a statement. ''I am told this type of tumor is slow-growing and not aggressive, and that my prognosis is excellent for a quick and complete recovery.'' In fact, the 59-year-old critic recovered quickly from a similar procedure 15 years ago. His ''Ebert & Roeper and the Movies'' show is taped far enough in advance that he won't miss any episodes.
