Winning Weighs

The complete list of Oscar winners. Jennifer Connelly picked up the evening's first award, but the lead acting categories provided the night's biggest drama

From the moment host Whoopi Goldberg descended from the ceiling festooned in feathers (à la Best Actress nominee Nicole Kidman in ''Moulin Rouge''), 6 cagillion viewers worldwide (our estimate, not confirmed) knew they were in for some surprises.

Sure, as many expected, Ron Howard took home Best Director for Best Picture winner ''A Beautiful Mind'' (which also took home the Best Adapted Screenplay award). Jennifer Connelly was the front-runner to win Best Supporting Actress for ''A Beautiful Mind,'' which she did in short order just minutes into the show. ''The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring'' spun its 13 nominations into 4 wins; ''Moulin Rouge'' and ''Black Hawk Down'' took home 2 awards apiece.

But it was the hotly contested lead-acting races that gave us the night's most excitement. ''Monster's Ball'''s Halle Berry became the first African-American woman to earn a Best Actress Oscar and Best Actor Denzel Washington (''Training Day'') delivered a humble tribute to his spiritual forebear, honorary-award recipient Sidney Poitier.

Did we mention that even perennial no-show Woody Allen made an appearance? And that Randy Newman -- after 16 nominations -- finally won! And that there were a few moments that were actually... funny? Whew! Check out all the winners:
