Never mind its reputation for excess: Hollywood is practicing serious self-control this Lent. Josh Hartnett gives up premarital lovin' in ''40 Days and 40 Nights,'' while off screen, celebs attending New York's Fashion Week (during which Lent began Feb. 13) had denial on the brain. TV morning queen Kelly Ripa vowed to give up chocolate, Joan Jett swore off coffee, and ''The Sopranos''' Lorraine Bracco nixed margaritas.
The most curious sacrifice? ''Matzo ball soup,'' says ''Ghost World'''s Scarlett Johansson. ''It's got too many carbohydrates.'' But much like her freewheeling ''Sex and the City'' alter ego, Kim Cattrall isn't letting the Catholic guilt get to her: ''I'm not giving up anything for anything!''
