As a court-martialed general serving time in a military prison known as The Last Castle, Robert Redford is impressively stoic and starched. But how did he ever get involved in such a simplistically heavy-handed salute to gentlemen warriors? It's almost funny how easily Redford's military father figure wins the hearts and minds of his fellow inmates before leading them in righteous rebellion against the martinet warden (James Gandolfini). Truly silly, though, is the resulting uprising, highlighted by the unveiling of an uncannily accurate makeshift catapult and the kamikaze commandeering of a prison helicopter. In comparison, ''The Longest Yard'' was gritty realism.
