If the results of the 8th Annual Screen Actors Guild awards are any indication of the chances of this month's Academy Award contenders, it looks like... actually, it's hard to say what it all means. True -- actors vote for both awards, but historically, winning a SAG hasn't always guaranteed Oscar gold.

Though Oscar favorite Russell Crowe (''A Beautiful Mind'') scored the best actor prize, best-actress winner Halle Berry (''Monster's Ball'') beat her strongest Oscar competition: Sissy Spacek (''In the Bedroom'') and Judi Dench (''Iris''). The Guild's film cast award went to ''Gosford Park,'' Robert Altman's true ensemble affair.

The night's television awards struck a patriotic tone, as ''The West Wing'' swept the drama awards, naming Martin Sheen best actor, Allison Janney best actress, and nabbing the coveted series ensemble prize. In the process, NBC's White House drama shut out HBO's awards-show darlings ''The Sopranos'' and ''Six Feet Under.''
