REAR GUARD Jovovich may kick serious butt in an ''Evil'' sequel

Tom Cruise may have to make do with zooming around in his own Porsche for a bit longer: While he and his producing partner, Paula Wagner, are developing a remake of ''Death Race 2000'' with director Paul W.S. Anderson (''Mortal Kombat''), Anderson's not quite ready to stop playing ''Resident Evil.'' The sci-fi horror flick, based on the popular videogame and starring Milla Jovovich as a zombie-killing badass, just opened this week, but the writer-director is already planning a sequel.

''I have an idea of what it would be, and Sony is very interested,'' says Anderson, who intends to pick up where the first film ends (Jovovich would star in the sequel as well.) ''I'm superstitious, so I don't want to put pen to paper until it opens, but if we open well, that next Monday I'll be on it.''

As for ''Death Race,'' ''Pretty Woman'' scribe J.F. Lawton has just handed in his first draft, and Cruise is attached to star, ''but he hasn't read the script yet,'' says Anderson. ''And you can't make him do anything he doesn't want to, strangely enough.''
