Didn't Wesley Snipes injure himself towards the end of the shoot?
We had about 10 days to go, and he pulled a ligament in his knee. It was a simple movement, but his landing was bad. It got to be really painful, and he had to recuperate. So we set up the exact same set in LA and finished filming a month and a half later.
We hear Wesley gets to engage in a little romance this time around.
There's a little bit. But you know what happens with superheroes and romances -- the chick never makes it out alive. Comic books are essentially a male world, so I tried to make Leonore Varela [who plays Nyssa] a worthy warrior Blade would respect. It's not a full-blown romance, just a hint of what might have been. In other words, Blade doesn't get laid.
Whistler [played by Kris Kristofferson] blew his brains out in ''Blade,'' yet he's back for the sequel. Discuss.
Audiences are savvy enough to know that, in a comic book, death is meaningless. So why not? ''Blade'' is 100 percent unadulterated candy, and has nothing to do with nutrition. It's a sugar rush.
You've mentioned you're interested in directing ''Blade 3.'' Can you give us a preview?
The movie is 25 years later, which would work because Blade ages slowly thanks to his vampire blood. It'll be really cool, because it takes place in a world designed by vampires. There'd be blood fountains, blood bars, and the nights would last 23 hours. Think Sparticus with vampire.
What's next?
Six months of vacation. My project for the summer is to teach my 6-year-old daughter how to dive in the south of Mexico. But I'm hoping to do ''Hellboy,'' another comic book adaptation that's very close to my heart, and we're coming out with an anniversary DVD of ''Cronos'' and a DVD of ''Devil's Backbone,'' which will have some storyboards and my first commentary track.
What can we expect on the ''Blade 2'' DVD?
Full storyboards of sequences that didn't make it into the movie, running commentary, and deleted scenes. The movie will be on one disc and the other disc will have lots of extras, like a making-of and interviews. I'm expecting it to be a handsome little devil.
C'mon, tell us about those deleted scenes.
There's one we called Sperm Removal. And all I can say is... well, you're just going to have get the DVD.
