LEGAL BRIEFS Celine Dion's husband and manager, Rene Angelil, is being sued by a woman who claims he raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room two years ago. Seeking unspecified damages are plaintiffs Yun Kyeong Sung Kwon, an ordained minister with the Full Gospel World Church in Los Angeles, and her husband, Ae Kwon. The couple claim that Angelil introduced himself to Mrs. Kwon while she was gambling at Caesar's Palace, offered her concert tickets, followed her back to the Imperial Palace hotel, fondled her in an elevator, forced himself into her hotel room, sexually assaulted her, and left before hotel security arrived. (The Kwons are also suing the hotel for negligence.) While Las Vegas police say the Kwons never reported the incident, Angelil did pay them a cash settlement to keep the charges from surfacing, his lawyer says, because he and Dion were busy with his cancer treatments and her fertility treatments. Still, an Angelil spokesman says, ''The lawsuit is an absurd fabrication contrived by opportunistic people looking for a way to make money,'' the spokesman said in a statement. ''The malicious claims are completely false and defamatory.'' Angelil hopes to win back the cash he paid the Kwons already and donate it to charity.
