WITCH EVER Erna is a Wiccan, but he says it doesn't inform his music
Sully Erna: Anthony Saint James /Retna

''I Stand Alone'' is more melodic and complex than other Godsmack songs. Is this a new direction for the band?
I took a chance and created a song unlike anything I'd ever done before. It might be a taste of the next level of Godsmack, but we haven't really started writing so we're not sure where we're going. This album is really important to us because it will decide whether we're capable of being the next Metallica.

This year your song ''Vampires'' was nominated for a Best Rock Instrumental Grammy. Did you expect that?
It's great to be recognized by the industry, but man, what a f--king stupid category. We're there with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, who write instrumentals for a living, and we wrote just one. But there were so many non-rock bands in the rock categories that you could tell a bunch of old fuddy duddies were trying to figure it all out.

How has becoming a father affected your music?
It's been awesome. I love this girl so much I'd drink her drool. But I don't want to tie her -- or, for that matter, my religion -- to my music. My music is my therapy, where I vent all the bullshit that bunches up inside of me. I may not always write when I'm miserable, but I'm not about to pull a Creed and write a ''With Arms Wide Open.'' That's showing off.

People have made a big fuss over your Wiccan beliefs. Do you regret revealing that you're a witch?
I've cut back talking about it. It's not that I'm not proud of it, but people are blowing it out of proportion. It's not like anyone asks. Besides, it's not like what you see in the movies. I mean, I only wish I could shoot sparks out of my eyes at a few sons of bitches in my life!
