The Lady and the Duke (2002)

Details Limited Release: May 10, 2002; Rated: PG; Length: 129 Minutes; Genres: Drama, Foreign Language; With: Jean-Claude Dreyfus and Lucy Russell; Distributor: Sony Pictures Classics

Now that ''Brotherhood of the Wolf'' and ''Amélie'' have welcomed digital effects into the French art house, 82-year-old auteur Eric Rohmer is taking full advantage. He shot this true-life tale (his 23rd film) of a Scottish noblewoman stuck in Paris during the French Revolution with his actors standing in front of a blue screen, ''Star Wars''-style. Later, he inserted painted backgrounds of late-18th-century scenery. Voilá! Eye candy you can feel snooty about.
