Here's a tip to Broadway producers: if you want to dominate the Tony nominations, adapt a 1967 movie. Last year, ''The Producers'' scored big, with 15 nominations and 12 wins. This year, the show that grabbed the most nominations was ''Thoroughly Modern Millie,'' with 11 nods, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Actress (Sutton Foster) and Best Actor (Gavin Creel). ''Millie'' edged out ''Urinetown'' and the revival of Stephen Sondheim's ''Into the Woods,'' which were both cited 10 times in the list of nominations announced Monday morning.
Other multiple honorees: the revival of Paul Osborn's play ''Morning's at Seven,'' whose nine nominations include three for Best Featured Actress and two for Best Featured Actor. Arthur Miller's ''The Crucible'' picked up six nominations, including Best Revival and Best Actor and Actress for Liam Neeson and Laura Linney. Kate Burton was nominated for her leading performance in ''Hedda Gabler'' and her featured performance opposite Billy Crudup in ''The Elephant Man.'' Unlike last year, dominated by an unprecedented sweep by ''The Producers,'' this year's race is considered competitive and wide open.
Shut out completely was the high-profile stage adaptation of ''The Graduate,'' with Kathleen Turner, Jason Biggs, and Alicia Silverstone. Moral: if you're going to adapt a 1967 movie, make it a musical.
The Tonys will be handed out on June 2 at a Radio City Music Hall ceremony that will air live on PBS and CBS. Below is a partial list of nominees; the full list is available at tonys.org.
