The 73-year-old bass singer of venerable a cappella gospel group Fairfield Four steps out for a belated but magnificent solo debut. His remarkably supple voice is a marvel of expressiveness, and he receives graceful support from Nashville combo the Bluebloods on devotional chestnuts plus the wry, Garrison Keillor-penned ''You Must Come In at the Bottom.'' The resulting album, punctuated by poignant spoken passages, is a resonant gem.
