Six weeks later, Potter has returned from a visit to Victoria. He and Shields have said their goodbyes (though this is their fifth farewell, as she keeps confounding her doctors). When asked how his friend and writer is doing, Potter says: "She was in very good spirits, but failing, gradually.... I think Carol gets a little tired that so much is made of her illness. She said to me, 'Time for some irony.' All this overseriousness and the photographs of her looking so sort of sad or depressed...when actually what's so amazing about her is how wonderfully full of life she is."
