Alcon had better hope so. Insomnia not only is the company's most expensive movie to date but the film could also be its last. After notching sleeper hits with My Dog Skip and Dude, Where's My Car?, the company--backed by FedEx founder Fred Smith--stumbled badly with the costumer The Affair of the Necklace (which also starred Swank). What's more, the competition is more than a little intimidating: Insomnia is being released only eight days after the latest in the franchise that made Nolan want to become a filmmaker in the first place.

"We're counterprogramming [for Star Wars]," says the director, who's currently writing his next project, a Howard Hughes biopic in which Jim Carrey will star. "It's funny, that movie totally dominated my thinking. I saw it 12 times." He runs his hands through his floppy blond hair and flashes a boyish smile: Looking for daylight in the long shadow of George Lucas, Chris Nolan, for one, feels right at home.
