In which young New Yorkers forget about keeping it real and make what sound like field recordings of a '30s mountain band: frenzied picking, in-the-bag singing, stomping-foot beats, stampeding melodies, and references to death, devils, and ''darkening light.'' Even if it's a goof, it's an eerie, mysterioso goof. B+
