Pin Ups (1999)

EW's GRADE
A

Details Lead Performance: David Bowie; Genre: Reissues

Later in '73, Bowie took a creative breather and made an album of favorite songs from the '60s. The absence of original material releases Pin Ups from serious consideration as a stage in Bowie's development, but the roaring glam- era renditions (backed by the Spiders From Mars) of venerable tunes by the Who, Pretty Things, Kinks, Yardbirds, Them, Easybeats, and others are, for the most part, exciting and effective. While digital mastering reveals layers of previously unheard audio action, two bonus songs-Bruce Springsteen's ''Growin' Up'' and Jacques Brel's ''Port of Amsterdam''- add nothing to an already-great record.
