8 KIRSTEN DUNST

FIRST BLUSH DESIGNER John Galliano for Christian Dior WHY IT WORKED Dunst chose a daring and youthful cut that suited her ingenue status. Another plus? Though many were pretty in pink, Dunst's hue truly complemented her rosy complexion. FUN FACT Dunst's baubles--particularly her Fred Leighton 19th-century diamond bracelets and two rings--kept getting snagged on her beaded, mesh-accented frock throughout the evening.

9 SHARON STONE

ROMANCING THE STONE DESIGNER Versace WHY IT WORKED Pirouetting gleefully on the red carpet, the always sharp Stone chose this daring gown for her first public appearance since her hospitalization last fall. The plunging scalloped dress showed Stone is back big time. FUN FACT Instead of a single diamond tennis bracelet from H. Stern, Stone decided to pile them on--eight in all--for a total of more than 250 diamonds (worth $80,000) on one arm.

10 CAMERON DIAZ

HIPPIE CHICK DESIGNER Ungaro WHY IT WORKED You've got to hand it to Diaz for sticking with her own unique, slightly bohemian style. Diaz said the kimono-style printed dress felt like pajamas. (Of course, the actress loses points for hair that looked like she had just gotten out of bed.) A tidier 'do would have better set off this insouciant gown. FUN FACT Diaz and her stylists turned a 19th-century Indian necklace (once owned by Adele Astaire) into a belt.

SPLIT DECISION

JENNIFER LOPEZ

THE HIGH-LO? DESIGNER Versace WHY IT WORKED The pleated pink gown flattered Lopez's assets... WHY IT DIDN'T ...but combined with her prom-queen curls, it made the hip J. Lo seem to be vying for Miss Congeniality. FUN FACT Lopez had been looking to Italian fashion magazines for inspiration, says hairstylist Oribe, who augmented the pouf with a few hairpieces. "It's very well-coiffed, big hair--she didn't want to look like everybody else." Mission accomplished.

THE WORST

1 JENNIFER CONNELLY

ECRU BOO-BOO DESIGNER Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere WHY IT FLOPPED Connelly never fails to look stunning in jet black, as she proved this awards season. Too bad she didn't stick with it for Oscar. Her beige Balenciaga was blah. As for the scarf--why cover up that beautiful neck? FUN FACT Before the ceremony, Connelly and her makeup artist "listened to Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits and had a quiet morning."

2 GWYNETH PALTROW

WHAT A SLOUCH DESIGNER Alexander McQueen WHY IT FLOPPED Unsupported breasts, Swiss Miss hair, and busy jewelry? We expect more from you, Gwynnie! And, pssst...you forgot to take off the Margot Tenenbaum eye makeup. FUN FACT McQueen designed the dress especially for the actress, based on a look from his fall 2002 show. He altered the Victorian-era-inspired gown, which was originally long-sleeved, to be sleeveless for Paltrow.

3 HEATHER MILLS

TUMMY TROUBLE DESIGNER Bruce Oldfield WHY IT FLOPPED While the vintage lace, belly-baring, slit-up-to-there frock was certainly sexy, it was a bit too clubby for Hollywood's biggest night. Paul should not have let it be. FUN FACT Mills decided to go with this little-known designer's work because he was the only one who would lend her a dress 10 years ago, before she was the soon-to-be Mrs. McCartney. Let's hope Stella does the wedding dress.
