Oscars 2002

Independents' Day

It's ''the awards show that celebrates what will come in sixth at the Oscars,'' said emcee John Waters, describing the 2002 IFP/West Independent Spirit Awards, the annual celebration of indie films held in Santa Monica, March 23 (sponsored in part by EW). And sure enough, the event's big winners were all shut out by Oscar. Top prizes went to In the Bedroom, Ghost World, and Memento, which took home Best Feature and Best Director, among others. Then again, it was Ghost World's Steve Buscemi who best summed up the indie spirit: ''Doing the film,'' he noted, ''is the best part of the whole thing.''
