C+

At its best, this square and tremulous tale of uplift, about a little Catholic kid (Adi Stein) who innocently tries to convert a little Jewish kid (Mike Weinberg) in the Chicago summer of 1976, is earnest and unironic -- a suburban 1970s story told with the naivete of 1950s TV theater. But absence of irony isn't enough to get into feature-film heaven: The picture (starring Aidan Quinn, Kevin Pollak, and Bonnie Hunt) isn't nearly as interesting as the Project Greenlight enterprise that spawned it.
