War is hell on songwriters. Its drama demands their best. Given that the pieces on the We Were Soldiers soundtrack were written quickly after the participants viewed the film, it's impressive that the heartfelt songs outnumber the indifferent ones. Johnny Cash and Train offer individual perspectives, while Jars of Clay and Steven Curtis Chapman lapse into sentimentality. Luckily, the poignant moments make this the most convincingly somber soundtrack since ''Dead Man Walking.''
