An unmoored period piece in which political passions, sexual desire, boy-on-boy violence, and World War II are all presented with the same measured delicacy, as if shot through a pint of Guinness. In this soft-focused rendering of Irish author Brendan Behan's autobiographical tale, Shawn Hatosy plays young Behan in an English reform school, torn between his sexual feelings for an openly gay friend (Danny Dyer), and his interest in the warden's tediously progressive artist daughter (Eva Birthistle).
