These groove merchants, who specialize in simmering instrumental funk, pitch a larger tent on their second release by successfully integrating some Keys-ian R&B and a couple of hip-hop tracks with vocals from Talib Kweli and the Roots' Black Thought. But it's a delicate balance; had Soulive shifted further to the middle, their album could've come off like dentist-office Fuzak.
