C+
The tone of this beery, bluesy film is dictated by the pickup-truck-lovin' prose style of Mississippi writer Larry Brown, upon whose writing the short-story-size movie is based. Arliss Howard directs and stars as a romanticized antihero with a busted marriage and a burning need to write, even when he's drunk and hurtin'; Arliss' real-life wife, Debra Winger, appears as the struggling writer's ex. There's a whole lot of opulent Southern atmosphere going on -- about some stunted, opaque characters.
