During his several dance numbers, Hines at least looks the part of groundbreaking vaudevillian Bill ''Bojangles'' Robinson. But all that hoofing does little to enliven a drearily conventional biopic that merely skims the surface of Bojangles' life story yet still manages to plod. Apparently trying to inject some style and/or substance, director Joseph Sargent contrives numerous opportunities for his actors to look into the camera and tell us things we already know. Just what this movie needs: something else to slow it down.
