All About
Black Hawk DownB-
The audience that goes to see Ridley Scott's square-jawed combat saga about a 1993 U.S. military mission gone horribly wrong in Somalia now watches this story with hearts reformatted by recent events. But watching American soldiers fight and die in a land they don't fully understand might have been more moving if Scott, a master of Gladiator-size visual showmanship, hadn't bombed away the personality of every man fighting. The interchangeable soldiers (including Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, and Tom Sizemore) matter little in Scott's war; only as a man-shaped mass that shoots, shouts, and survives do they register.
