All About
Gosford ParkA-
Grandly entertaining. Robert Altman, in his elegantly topsy-turvy Masterpiece Theatre movie, takes a puckish pleasure in reshuffling the worlds of upstairs and downstairs. We're in a remote English mansion in 1932, where the crusty, lecherous Sir William (Michael Gambon) is playing host to a shooting party. Each of the many guests shows up with a servant in attendance, and Altman employs his fluid, sprawling, multicharacter style as an implicit wry commentary on the class system, which is that you can't separate it into parts. The cast is so prestige-packed it's almost funny; standing out from the crowd are the dainty megalomania of Maggie Smith and the walking-on-air charm of Jeremy Northam.
