For those unfamiliar with Berne, this two-CD set is a pleasant introduction to the veteran alto player's avant-garde compositions. Each disc contains a pair of extended tracks decorated with dramatic -- sometimes Hitchcockian -- twists and turns, in which Berne's soulful, often virile style is complemented by Marc Ducret's spacey guitar, Herb Robertson's jittering trumpet, and the CAE's layered symphonic sound. Listeners will be amply rewarded for being Open-minded.
