A-
In the first (and arguably best) adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's suspense novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, French director Rene Clement lets the murderously ingenious plot build gradually yet grippingly. Delon -- as pretty as the colorfully shot Italian Riviera locales -- is perfect as smooth impostor Tom Ripley, and though Maurice Ronet is no Jude Law, he's convincing as obnoxious, filthy-rich playboy Philippe Greenleaf. Finally available on DVD, Purple Noon holds up quite well 40 years on, right down to its killer ending.
