RING A DING DING

One ring to rule them all? Sounds about right. New Line lorded it over the New Year's-weekend competition as the first installment of Peter Jackson's trilogy earned $57 million en route to a $174.1 million total. Meanwhile, corporate sibling Warner Bros. was busy building an underground, heist-proof vault for all its cash, as Ocean's Eleven hit the jackpot again ($26.2 million), catapulting the studio to its first overall box office crown in eight years. After its record-setting Christmas Day opening, heavyweight Ali finished fourth, TKO'd by welterweight Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius ($22.3 million). And lower down, things look gorgeous for A Beautiful Mind ($12.6 million in only 525 theaters) and regal for The Royal Tenenbaums ($7.7 million in fewer than 300 theaters).
