In Monsters, Inc., the induction of Randy Newman into the children's-movie realm has been a mostly win-win situation: He gets a nicely padded day gig, and kid-flick culture gets the benefits of the songwriting legend's smarts and melodic savvy. His newest score serves up brassy Americana and kinetic bits reminiscent of pioneering cartoon king Carl Stallings, and includes a signature sweet tune, ''If I Didn't Have You,'' sung by Billy Crystal and John Goodman. Newman, Inc., continues to be the kind of enterprise that is as reliable as fine and creative comfort food.
