Cherry: A Life of Apsley Cherry-Garrard Sara Wheeler (Random House, $26.95) Cherry-Garrard, a member of Scott's doomed 1911-12 race against Amundsen to the South Pole, later wrote an eloquent memoir of the expedition, The Worst Journey in the World. Now Wheeler has written a lively biography of the adventurer-author. Born into a life of privilege, Cherry-Garrard signed on with Scott as an ''adaptable helper.'' His first task: teaching himself to use the two typewriters on board. Wheeler keeps Cherry-Garrard's story humming along, novel-like, from his lord-of-the-manor childhood to his friendship with neighbor George Bernard Shaw. Known fondly as curmudgeonly yet generous, Cherry-Garrard's southern hemisphere exposure obviously stayed in his blood; he courted his wife-to-be with the mating rituals of the stone-giving, nest-building penguin.
